Key Ingredients

  • Puff pastry – Puff pastry sheets are found in the freezer section of most grocery stores. Thaw it according to the package instructions. It’s usually best to thaw in the refrigerator.
  • Cheeses – We are using parmesan and gruyere cheeses in these puff pastry straws. Grate the parmesan yourself. Use the grating side of the cheese grater. Not the shredded holes. Don’t use the stuff in the green can.
  • Seasoning – We use Italian seasoning and garlic powder. You can use fresh herbs too. You can switch up the seasonings too. The cheese is salty enough so there is no need to add additional salt and pepper.

With a rolling pin roll out the sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured work surface to approximately a 10×12 inch square.

With a knife or pizza cutter slice the dough into long 1/2″ strips.

Pastry strips twisted on a parchment lined baking sheet.

One strip at a time, pick up the cheese straw strip and twist both ends in an opposite direction until the strip is completely spiraled.  Place on the prepared baking tray.

Slightly press the ends onto parchment paper to prevent any untwisting. Repeat with the remaining strips spacing 1″ on the baking sheet.
