Peach Cobbler

Peach cobbler doesn’t need a long list of ingredients to be good. Fresh peaches, a buttery batter, and a little cinnamon are really all it takes. As it bakes, the batter rises around the fruit, creating a golden crust while the peaches become soft and juicy underneath.

Ingredients Needed

  • Fresh peaches – Thick slices of ripe, firm peaches are the star of this cobbler, becoming soft and juicy as they bake.
  • Fresh lemon juice – Brightens the peach flavor and helps keep the fruit from browning.
  • Unsalted butter – Melted in the baking dish to create the rich, buttery crust.
  • Granulated sugar – Sweetens both the batter and the peaches.
  • All-purpose flour – Gives the cobbler its tender, cake-like topping.
  • Baking powder – Helps the batter rise around the peaches as it bakes.
  • Kosher salt – Balances the sweetness and enhances the overall flavor.
  • Vanilla extract – Adds warmth and complements the peaches.
  • Milk – Combines with the dry ingredients to create the batter.
  • Ground cinnamon – Adds just enough warm spice without overpowering the fresh peach flavor.

Fresh vs Frozen Peaches

Fresh peaches are our favorite when they’re in season. Look for somewhat firm peaches that give just slightly when gently squeezed and smell sweet.

If using frozen peaches, thaw and drain them well to keep the cobbler from becoming watery.

If you only have canned peaches, drain them thoroughly before adding them to the baking dish. Peaches packed in juice will give the best flavor and texture.

How to Make Old Fashioned Peach Cobbler

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and melt the butter in a 9×9-inch baking dish (2-quart).

Step 2: In a large bowl, gently toss the sliced peaches with the fresh lemon juice and 1/2 cup sugar and set aside.

Step 4: Pour the batter directly over the melted butter. Do not stir. Arrange the peaches evenly over the batter, again without stirring. As the cobbler bakes, the batter rises around the peaches to create a beautifully golden crust.

Step 5: Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the peach filling is bubbling around the edges. Allow the cobbler to cool for about 20 minutes before serving.

Tips

  • Thick peach slices hold their shape better during baking.
  • Don’t stir the layers after adding the batter and peaches. That’s what creates the classic cobbler texture.
  • The beauty of this cobbler recipe is that the juices from the fruit soak into the batter and don’t leave a puddle in the bottom of the pan.
  • If your peaches are extra ripe and juicy, let the cobbler cool a little longer before serving so the juices have time to thicken.
  • Let the cobbler cool for at least 20 minutes before serving. The filling thickens as it cools and won’t be quite as runny.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Variations

  • Add More Spice – A pinch of nutmeg or cardamom pairs beautifully with fresh peaches.
  • Brown Sugar – Replace a portion of the granulated sugar with dark brown sugar for a deeper caramel flavor.
  • Add Berries – Mix in a handful of fresh blueberries or blackberries with the peaches for a delicious twist.
  • Almond Flavor – A few drops of almond extract complement peaches wonderfully.

Storage

Cover any leftovers and refrigerate for up to 4 days. Reheat individual servings in the microwave for 20 to 30 seconds, or warm the baking dish in a 325°F oven until heated through.

FAQs

Do I need to peel the peaches?

No. I find that the skin softens once cooked. Wash and dry thoroughly, then slice into thick wedges. But if you prefer, you can peel the peaches.

Can peach cobbler be made ahead of time?

Yes. Bake it earlier in the day and gently reheat in a 325ºF oven before serving.

Why don’t you stir the batter?

Leaving the layers alone allows the batter to rise around the peaches while baking, creating the classic cobbler texture.

Can I freeze peach cobbler?

yes. Cool completely, wrap tightly, and freeze for up to 3 months. Be aware that the topping (crust) may become somewhat soggy after thawing.
